In the late 1990s, while I was still a practicing Certified Financial Planner®, I was struck by all of the stories of windfalls-gone-wrong. For some reason, when people won the lottery or received large insurance settlements or inheritances, their stories often took unfortunate turns. I wanted to figure out why, and I wanted to do something about it.
Sudden Money: Managing a Financial Windfall (Wiley 2000) was the result of my initial examination of the challenges of having to manage (or learning you will have to manage) an amount of money you are not used to managing. Ultimately, I discovered that although it may appear to be money that has changed, the reality is that life has changed. Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to ease out of what life once was into what it will be.
